Last week, I discussed kitchen design and how I like to think of kitchens in terms of zones. Once you do that, things become more intuitive. Now I want to share my favorite kitchen gadgets and accessories.
The Breville Toaster Oven
A couple of years ago, I upgraded to the Breville toaster oven. I never knew I could love a toaster oven so much! In years past, I used to have both a toaster and a toaster oven but decided my counter space was too precious. I really don't miss my regular toaster at all.
The Breville does it all to perfection - toasting and baking. You can even make cookies in it!
I received this workhorse as a wedding gift almost twenty years ago and it's still going strong. It's super heavy so I recommend having a dedicated space on the counter for it. I make pizza dough, cakes and frosting in it lickety split.
I don't even have a hand mixer. This bad boy takes care of everything - from a quick applesauce cake to a more involved cake. I have to admit that I'm not a baker, but I swear by my KitchenAid.
The term "open kitchen" means that utensils and gadgets are kept out in the open so they're easy to reach. I get really annoyed with opening and closing cabinets while creating culinary magic so I prefer more of an open kitchen style. It's hard to keep things looking neat though, so I use attractive containers and trays.
I keep my salt, pepper and cooking oils on a tray near my range.
I also like to keep my large cooking spoons and spatulas in a container on my counter, and I only include utensils that are either stainless steel or wood.
My favorite thing to keep on my counters is my tinfoil and parchment paper. I found a really cool butcher paper holder at an estate sale a few years back and I gave it new life. I feel so in control when I rip a piece of foil to make the kids' school lunches!
Having things within easy reach makes for a smoothly flowing kitchen. Remember we're supposed to dance while we're cooking!
Good Quality Sharp Knives
My sister gave me some AMAZING knives several years ago and they're a real game changer in the kitchen. The key to easy cooking is having really good knives. They're worth every penny!
Also very important is that they're kept sharp. All of my knife wounds have occured because my knives were dull. A dull knife slips and cuts you instead of the food. If you're apprehensive about sharpening your knives yourself, Whole Foods offers a knife sharpening service every once in a while.
Tunes and TV
This is what brings your kitchen to life - music and a TV. They turn your kitchen from a utilitarian space into one that you can really hang out in. When my husband and I are sitting at the peninsula drinking beer, watching TV and listening to our favorite 80s music, I feel like I'm sitting at my favorite bar.
Task and Mood Lighting
Maybe it's because I'm getting old, but I need good light in my kitchen. Under counter lighting, general overhead lighting and mood lighting. Oh yes, and the lights have to be on dimmers and you should have some candles lit. That really makes a kitchen feel good.
Those are my favorite kitchen must-haves. Please share yours!
Until next time!
