Okay - I have to be honest here. We've abandoned ship. Goodbye Martha!!! We're D-U-N!!! Her detailed cleaning checklist is way too overwhelming for our little team of three and our summer schedule is hitting high speed so we need to be practical here.
I have to say that I'm a little disappointed with this Martha book. I got sucked into the idea that having a clean and tidy home could be a no brainer if I did it Martha's way. Instead I found it to be way too boring and impractical. Vacuuming and flipping cushions twice a week? No thanks! Martha's book is good if you need a super comprehensive book for caring for your home and have the time or staff to do it her way. Unfortunately, I have neither! This tome is going into storage until who knows when. Or maybe I'll just donate it to the library.
What's so ironic is that just today, the day I decided to abandon Martha, I received all sorts of offers and guides from her! I'm sorry - it's too late! I'm a dropout!
So, who am I going to turn to for guidance in how to keep this house running smoothly and looking good while teaching the kids valuable life skills? It's Martha's big competition in the magazine and lifestyle world - Real Simple. I've found some good advice from them. Much more practical!
The kids and I are still working as a team but now we're sticking with the basics - we're not trying to win any cleaning awards here. They're in charge of trash, dusting, putting laundry away and steam cleaning the floors. Also, of course, tidying up. They're still deciding who does what based on what they pick out a hat. I'm in charge of everything else. For now, I guess that's just the way it's going to be!
I'm all about sharing ideas in home design, gardening and living so we can love our homes. I'm joined by my dog, Boomer, who is always by my side.
